CHAPTER THREE
Oakland, California
“I hope you can finally manage to kill the son of a bitch, Shaw. I’m paying for results, not close calls and misses. It’s been four years. Alastar Adams has cost me money and made me look bad. The other leaders think they can take what’s mine. They think I’m easy fuckin’ prey.”
Colman Quinn continued to wail, only a small part of Baron Shaw listening to the man. He’d heard it all before.
Four bloody years’ worth of bitching.
He, too, wanted Adams dead. The arsehole had methodically hunted and eliminated his entire special ops team. And some of those guys had been Shaw’s mates, men he’d known since moving to the States. Men who’d fought with him, thought like him, despised humans like him.
Killed with me. And now they’re gone. Because of him.
“Are you listening to me, Shaw? If I don’t deliver that bastard’s head by the end of the week, then I’m as good as dead. Do you understand? Fuckin’ kill Alastar Adams and bring his decapitated head to me.”
“And what do I get in return, Quinn?” Because, hell no, money wasn’t all he wanted, not nearly. Power.
“Name your price. Just get the job done tonight.”
“The Carolinas. I want them.”
Colman Quinn paused, and Shaw could’ve sworn he heard the man’s devious mind calculating. “Those two states have been under the Johnson family control for generations. Brian Johnson won’t be easy to dispatch.”
No, he wouldn’t. But Johnson had been a thorn in Quinn’s highbrow arse for as long as Shaw had known him—Johnson, the main demon cell leader calling for Quinn’s head. Loud and persistent, Johnson had argued that Colman Quinn was no longer capable of controlling the California region. Alastar Adams was a perfect excuse to push Johnson’s own agenda. The one that included Johnson and his demon crew getting rid of an old rival while gaining territory in the process, expanding to the west a personal coup for Brian Johnson and his sons.
Even better for me is that whoever has been backing Quinn isn’t anymore. I don’t like not knowing who his powerful ally had been, lest they come knocking when I’ve secured what is due me. No matter. Lauren and I can take care of any fool who thinks they can take what’s ours.
“Kill Alastar Adams, and the Carolinas are yours.” Quinn offered up the Carolinas as if he had a real choice but to agree to Shaw’s terms. “I’ll see to it personally. I hate getting my hands dirty. That’s why I outsource.” Quinn mumbled the last sentence with all the glorified distaste of a pampered prince. The line went dead, and all Shaw was left with was a dial tone and a smirk. Quinn may be a spoiled, pompous windbag, but he was also a powerful demon, too arrogant to get blood under his manicured fingers with the likes of Alastar Adams, but more than fierce enough to butt heads with the mighty Brian Johnson. Quinn might even win.
Or die trying. If he’s killed, Lauren and I could claim California.
